Prenatal choline · Phosphatidylcholine
Where it all
begins.
Choline is a building block of your baby's brain, yet most prenatal vitamins contain little or none. Origin uses phosphatidylcholine, the exact form tested in the largest prenatal choline trial.

The essentials
Simple supplements, done properly.
A short list of the nutrients most people fall short on, starting with the one most prenatals leave out.
Why choline
Choline helps build a growing brain
It's an essential nutrient your body can't make enough of on its own. During pregnancy it flows from you to your baby, and the need keeps rising while you breastfeed.
Baby's brain†
Supports normal brain and memory development before birth.
Nervous system†
Supports the developing spinal cord and nerve cells.
Breast milk†
Choline passes into breast milk, so your needs stay high after birth.
Your own health†
Supports normal liver function while your body does extra work.

The choline gap
Your needs go up. Your prenatal doesn't.
You need 450mg of choline a day while pregnant and 550mg while breastfeeding. Here's how common sources measure up.

Daily needs (Adequate Intake) and food values from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. Origin's 900mg of choline is the daily dose recommended by the researchers behind the CU Anschutz trial.
900mg of choline
Six eggs a day, or two gummies.
Eggs are one of the richest food sources of choline. Even so, reaching the researchers' recommended 900mg from eggs alone would mean about six of them, every day of your pregnancy.

A large egg has about 147mg of choline (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements), about 72 calories and 186mg of cholesterol (USDA). Eggs are a great food; this just shows how much it takes to reach 900mg from food alone.

The research
The largest prenatal choline trial ever run.
Researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz gave pregnant women either phosphatidylcholine, a form of choline found in food, or a placebo every day from week 16 until delivery. Their children were followed to age 4. The results were published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

900mg
of choline daily: the dose the researchers now recommend
Origin uses the same form, phosphatidylcholine, but Origin itself was not tested in this study. The trial used 9,000mg of phosphatidylcholine daily. About a third of families did not complete the age-4 follow-up, and the researchers say larger studies are needed. Read the study summary
The +8 IQ result
What +8 IQ points looks like.
At age 4, children whose mothers took choline in the CU Anschutz trial scored about 8 IQ points higher on average than the placebo group. Shift a whole group by 8 points and far more children land in the higher range, which is what the lead researcher described.
Illustration only: standard IQ curves (mean 100) shifted by the trial's reported average difference. Not data from individual children, and not a promise of results for any one child. Origin itself was not tested in this study; about a third of families did not complete the age-4 follow-up.
When it matters
From positive test through weaning.
Positive test
Start early
Choline matters throughout pregnancy. Ask your doctor, then make it part of every day.
Week 16
When the trial began
Women in the CU Anschutz trial started choline at 16 weeks and continued until delivery.
Third trimester
Fastest brain growth
Your baby's brain grows faster in the final months of pregnancy than at any other time.
Birth
Still flowing
Choline passes to your baby through breast milk, so your body keeps supplying it.
Breastfeeding
Needs peak at 550mg
Your daily need is higher while nursing than at any point in pregnancy.
Weaning
Done
From positive test through weaning, two gummies a day covers it.
